Cluster Headache

Cluster headache is a rare type of headache, which appears in time periods (clusters). It is seen more often in men than in women. Cluster headache is an intense drilling pain on just one side of the head.

During a cluster attack proteins are being released around the blood vessels in the meninges. This causes a vasodilation of these blood vessels with inflammatory features. The most important features of cluster headache are: Sharp, stabbing pain on just one side of the head Radiation of pain to the eye, above the ear, upper jaw and neck Stuffy nose (side of the pain) Tearing eye, sagging eyelid (side of the pain) Narrowing pupil (side of the pain) Increasing urge to move.

The cause of cluster headache is unknown. Although climate, night rest and alcohol are sometimes triggering factors. Cluster headache attacks are not easy to avoid. However triggering factors must be avoided to prevent an attack of cluster headache. Cluster headache cannot be healed since the cause is not yet known. Medication can possibly result in a decrease of the frequency or the seriousness of the headache.
