The epidural space is located in the spinal canal from the base of the skull down to the coccyx. In the epidural space connective tissue, blood vessels and the exiting nerve roots from the spinal cord are located. The exiting nerve roots can become irritated by various causes. Administering anti-inflammatory medication in this area, can have a positive effect on the irritation of the tissue and pain can be reduced.
The epidural space is located in the spinal canal. This space is situated between the hard spinal cord membrane and the inner side of the spinal canal, which surrounds the spinal cord. The epidural space contains connective tissue, blood vessels and the spinal cord exiting nerve roots. It may be necessary to inject drugs, for example, analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs to treat the pain. The epidural space runs from the base of the skull down to the coccyx. Therefore, the epidural injection, depending on the location of the pain, can be administered over this entire area: at loin (lumbar) level at chest (thoracic) level at neck (cervical) level
Preparing for the treatment The treatment takes place in the OCP Medical Center. The treatment is performed by an anesthesiologist of OCP Medical Center. You do not have to make any preparations at home unless specifically stated. You do not have to fast on the day of the treatment. You’ll arrive at the clinic about fifteen minutes before the treatment. An employee of OCP Medical Center guides you to a waiting area. Before the procedure starts, a nurse and / or doctor will bring you to the adjacent treatment room. In some cases, before the treatment an IV is inserted in the hand. The treatment During the treatment you are seated on the edge of the treatment table. The doctor will numb skin on the back with a local anesthetic, after which a special needle will be inserted into the epidural space. When the right spot is located with the needle, the doctor will inject an anti-inflammatory agent (80 mg depomedrol) in the epidural space. This can be painful in the limbs for a short period of time, because of the pressure the liquid exerts on the nerves. On indication of the doctor, sometimes there will also be 2 ml lidocaine 2% injected in the epidural space. At the site of the injection, a bandage is stuck, which may be removed after a few hours. The treatment usually takes about 5 minutes. The result is assessable after a few days.
The results of the treatment are assessable after a few days to weeks. It is, however, very possible that you experience improvement earlier. In a number of cases a repeat or additional treatment may be necessary. Four to six weeks after the treatment a nurse or specialist will discuss the results via phone and discuss possible further treatments with you. Based on the cause of your pain, your specialist will assess if a physical treatment is necessary. Based on the medical history the necessity of additional tests will be decided.
