Phantom Pain
Post traumatic dystrophy is now named as Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). A distinction can be made between CRPS type 1, where there is no nerve damage and CRPS type 2, where there is some damage of the nerves. CRPS occurs mostly in the arms and legs.

Facial pain is a collective noun for pain in the facial area. Facial pain is a chronic pain disorder whereby sometimes, by damaging of a facial nerve, heavy pain can be experienced in parts of the facial area. Face ache can generate a wide range of pain complaints and can have multiple causes, which need different treatments. That is why we make the following distinction. ‘Typical facial pain’ or ‘trigeminal neuralgia’ The pain is being caused by irritation of the facial nerve, the trigeminus. This is causing short shallow and sharp pain on one side of the face. This can be caused by a soft touch, but can also be caused by talking, chewing or shaving. Pain complaints can spontaneously disappear sometimes after months or even years, but they can also return suddenly. In most cases there is not an identifiable cause for the appearance of face-ache. The treatment will at first be implemented with medication, such as anticonvulsants or antispasmodics. This medication is developed for the treatment of epilepsy or contortions, but also have a dampening effect on the activity of nerve cells. In case medication does not have the right effect, the doctor can decide to implement radiofrequency heat treatments on the facial nerve, the so-called Sweet-treatments. ‘Atypical facial pain’ In case the typical facial pain is not ‘typical’, it can also be called ‘atypical’. This pain is often being defined as pain that is present daily and on a continue basis. The cause of the pain is often not clear. Just like typical facial pain, this pain is first being treated using medication. In case medication is not reducing the pain, the heat treatments are also being considered.
