TENS

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and is used to reduce pain, using electrical currents. TENS is a device the size of a pack of cigarettes. Connected to the device are 2 (long) wires, which are attached to electrodes. These 2 electrodes are taped to the skin. The TENS-device emits an electrical signal, which can be used to stimulate certain nerves in the skin. TENS works like a type of painkiller, but does not cure the cause of the pain.

EFFECTS OF TENS The body has both thick and thin nerves. The very thin nerves are the pain nerves. When these nerves are stimulated they send pain signals to the brain. This then makes you feel the pain. The thicker nerves are stronger than pain nerves. By stimulating the thicker nerves with TENS, the transmission of pain signals can be blocked. TENS stimulates the thicker nerves, which can make you feel less pain. TENS works differently than medication. Prolonged use of TENS is not harmful. It can, however, cause skin irritation. Other than that, TENS does not have side effects.
