Do you think your breasts are too small compared to the rest of your body or have your breasts gotten weaker (for instance after a pregnancy)? A breast augmentation can help your bring your figure back to balance. A breast augmentation is not only about increasing the volume of your breasts. Also the shape of your breasts and the proportion compared to the rest of your body are important. Actually a breast augmentation these days is more like breast beautification, where we carefully listen to you and enhance the size and shape of your breasts according to your wishes.
You can go home after the procedure and 3-5 days after the procedure the sutures are removed. You will initially need to wear a supportive bra to support the new shape of your breasts.
The procedure is performed for women who find that their breasts are too small and for women who due to a pregnancy or weight loss got less firm or smaller breasts. Also hanging breasts can be corrected. Using a soft and natural feeling implant your breast and decolleté will be fuller. And you will have the figure you always wanted. Our expert plastic surgeons use special techniques that reduce scarring and create a visibly more natural look and feeling.
Upon the first contact with our Plastic Surgery department, you will be in contact with your own, dedicated Patient Coordinator. He or she will advise you on the procedure, help you choose a doctor, book an appointment and anything else you might need. This ensures that your experience is smooth and that you feel comfortable.
During the initial consultation with at OCP, you will discuss everything related to the procedure: which method will be used, expectations of the result, possible risks and aftercare. The Plastic Surgeon will also take pictures for your medical file, which is securely stored.
The plastic surgeon will draw on the breast where the incisions will be made. The silicone implant will be inserted via a small incision. After creating the ‘pocket’ (the space where the implant will fit), the implant will be inserted.
An implant can be placed two different ways: underneath the breast tissue or underneath the breast muscle using the ‘dual plane’ technique.
Placement under the breast tissue is possible when the gland and fat tissue are thick enough at the top of the breast. An advantage to this is that the implant will form unity with the breast’s own gland tissue, that creates a natural form and movement of the breast.
If the gland and fat tissue is not thick enough, then placement using the ‘dual plane’ technique the best option. There is then a reduced risk that the edges of the implant can be felt. The top of the implant will be placed under the large breast muscle, while the bottom half of the implant will be underneath the gland of the breast. Using this technique the edges of the implant are not visible and can not be felt. This technique is a bit more complicated.
The incision is usually made in the crease under the breast fold, ensuring that the scar will not be visible after the procedure. An incision in the crease of the breast fold is usually preferred because this will give the surgeon the best sight at where the implant will be placed. It is also possible to insert the implant via a small incision in the nipple area. During the consultation with the plastic surgeon you can discuss what your requirements are.
After placement of the implants the incision are sutured. If necessary a ‘drain’ will be placed, this will ensure that blood or any fluids can flow out of the body. This drain is usually removed on the same day of the procedure or the day after. The procedure takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
A breast augmentation is always performed under general anesthesia. It might be that you have some anxiety for the general anesthesia, because of the weird feeling afterwards. You will be looked after by experienced staff and guided till you leave the hospital by nurses, the anesthesiologist and your plastic surgeon.
Location of the procedure
A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which will be done in a sterile environment. The procedure will take place in a hospital contracted by OCP, close to the clinic. Even though the procedure takes place at a different location, all your consultations and all contact goes via OCP.
After the procedure
When you recover from the general anesthesia you may feel weak and tired. Responses to general anesthesia differ per person, but special anesthetics are used to reduce the risk of nausea.
You may leave the hospital at the moment your plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist consider this acceptable. You may spend 1 night in the hospital to recover.
After the procedure you probably will not experience a lot of pain, but in case it is necessary you will be prescribed pain medication. The first few weeks after the procedure you will need to wear a supportive bra, which will support the new shape of the breasts and reduces the swelling. Your doctor will explain for how long you will need to wear this bra.
To reduce swelling, you will get some medication. Usually the swelling becomes much less after 3 days. 48 hours after the procedure you can shower, and you may remove the sportsbra when doing this.
We recommend to take a week rest after the procedure. After this you can continue your daily activities, but refrain from exercising. It is important that the first few weeks after the procedure that there will be no tension or pressure on the breasts. The sutures will be removed after a week.
The swelling will disappear after 2 to 6 weeks. In the beginning, the sensation in your nipples may be different, from very sensitive to numb. You will gradually get back the feeling in your nipples, but it differs per person how long this will take.
The first months the scar can be quite red of colour. After this they will adjust to your skin colour and become less visible. It is important to not expose the scars to sunlight during the first year after the procedure. Keep the scars covered or protect them with a high protection sun cream (sun block).
Risks of a Breast Augmentation
A breast augmentation is done by an expert surgeon of OCP. Complications luckily rarely occur. As with most cosmetic surgeries, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, disinfectants or plasters. Also, even though the procedure is done under sterile conditions, the area could be infected. Chances to this are very small though. Specific risks of a breast augmentation are tearing of the outer layer of the implant. If an implant breaks, it will need to be replaced. The implants used can not leak its contents. Another risk is numbness in (part of) the breast.
Results The result of a breast augmentation are visible directly after the procedure. Your breasts will be quite swollen at this point though. After approximately 3 months you will have a good impression of the final result. The incisions that are necessary to place the implants will be stitched as beautifully as possible. The first months they might be quite red, but after approximately a year they will hardly be visible anymore. You may only see some small white lines. After a breast augmentation you can still breastfeed normally, if there is no damage to the glands.
