OCP Medical Center is specialized in liposuction, performed by experienced Plastic Surgeons. Liposuction of the abdominal area or liposuction of the legs is the solution for distracting fat deposits. Because of local fat accumulations, you can have the feeling that your body is not in proportion. When dieting and exercising does not help to reduce those fat accumultations, liposuction may be an option. Using liposuction, we bring your body back to balance, with lasting results. Because if you will maintain a stable weight, the removed fat celles after the procedure will not come back.
Liposuction improves your figure, but is not an alternative to a diet to reduce weight. There are cases, if you are too heavy, that it is not possible for you to have liposuction. To check if you are eligible for liposuction, use the Broca-index: take your height in centimeters and deduct this by 100. The remaining number is your base weight. If you are maximum 15% over or under your base weight, there is are no restrictions for you to have the procedure. The Plastic Surgeon will carefully assess you and help you decide.
Upon the first contact with our Plastic Surgery department, you will be in contact with your own, dedicated Patient Coordinator. He or she will advise you on the procedure, help you choose a doctor, book an appointment and anything else you might need. This ensures that your experience is smooth and that you feel comfortable.
During the initial consultation with at OCP, you will discuss everything related to the procedure: which method will be used, expectations of the result, possible risks and aftercare. The Plastic Surgeon will also take pictures for your medical file, which is securely stored.
When the anesthesia starts working, the Plastic Surgeon makes several small incisions. Using a thin cannula the tumescent anesthetic is injected. Then the fat cells are being sucked using a cannula, the doctor will use the so-called criss-cross movement. In this case the movement is not in the same direction for more than two to three times, so that there are only small subcutaneous tunnles. The surgeon constantly check the place where fat has been sucked, to carefully assess if the right amount of fat has been removed.
The suction needles are attached to a vaccuum pump that allows the fat to be sucked away. The removal of the fat is painless. There might be a light pressure to be felt and the movement of the needles might be uncomfortable. When the surgeon is finished, the incisions will be patched or, depending on the size of the incision, sutured. You will need to wear corrective pants to reduce swelling and bruising for 2 to 4 weeks. Depending on the amount of locations where fat is removed, the procedure takes 1 hour to 3 hours.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia or sedation. In this case you will be relaxed and sleeping. You will not feel anything during the procedure, but you can easily being awoken. It is also possible to perform this procedure under general anesthesia, this can be discussed with your doctor.
Location of the procedure
Liposuction is a surgical procedure which will be done in a sterile environment. The procedure may take place in a hospital contracted by OCP, close to the clinic. Even if the procedure takes place at a different location, all your consultations and all contact goes via OCP.
After the procedure
The liposuction procedure is not painful, as the anesthesia injected will minimize this. There will be some discomfort after the procedure due to swelling and bruising. It is also possible that you will ‘leak’ a little bit after the procedure, due to the injection of the tumescent fluid. This usually resolves within 24 hours.
The recovery period is approximately 2 to 4 weeks. After the procedure the skin on the treated area will be very sensitive for the first 2 to 3 days. You also might feel a little weak after the treatment, this happens because of the fluid imbalance the first few days. All these symptoms are considered normal after a liposuction procedure.
The Plastic Surgeon will assess your condition after the procedure and sometimes you can go home directly after the procedure. This depends on the amount of areas treated. The pain after the procedure differs for each patient, but Paracetamol will suffice in most cases. The recovery other than that will be painless. As with any other cosmetic surgery the treated area needs time to heal. The incisions for liposuction are usually so small that there will be no scars.
The recovery after liposuction takes some time. Directly after the procedure you will not notice a difference, as the treated area will be swollen and will show bruising. This recovers fairly quickly and within a few days good results can be seen and a clear change in the contour of the body is visible. It can take up to 4 weeks before most of the swelling is gone and definite results are visible. The swelling should be completely gone after 6 months.
The final result is usually assessed 3 to 6 months after the procedure. During this time the skin will become more firm.
After puberty, the body does not create new fat cells. The fat cells that have been removed will not come back. The results are permanent. If your weight increases, the remaining fat cells in the treated area will gradually increase in size along with the other fat cells in your body. The contour of your body will not change though.
If you have realistic expectations of the procedure, you will mostly be very happy after the procedure. The final result will depend on several factors: your build, your age, hormone function, recovery of your body and the elasticity of your skin. The plastic surgeon can clearly indicate which results may be expected.
Risks of an Liposuction
Liposuction is done by an expert surgeon of OCP and the technique is very refined. Complications luckily rarely occur. As with most cosmetic surgeries, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, disinfectants or plasters. Also, even though the procedure is done under sterile conditions, the area could be infected. Chances to this are very small though. Specific risks of liposuction are irregular skin surface in the treated area, discoloration of the skin due to bruising and fluid retention. Smoking increases the risk for an infection, so we therefore advise to quit smoking for several weeks. The plastic surgeon will explain more about this.
