Gynaecomastia (formation of breasts in men) is an embarrassing problem for many men. It is increasingly common. Sometimes even in young men during puberty. This type of breast formation usually disappears spontaneously. Gynaecomastia is most common in men 30 to 50 of age.
The procedure takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes , depending on the complexity.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia or sedation. In this case you will be relaxed and sleeping. You will not feel anything during the procedure, but you can easily being awoken.

It can be serious problem and even prevent you from doing things you like, for instance exercising or swimming. Luckily, this can be solved! Usually the procedure consists of two parts: removing the glandular tissue from under the skin and removing excess fat using the liposuction procedure. If there is no excess glandular tissue, then liposuction will be sufficient.
Sometimes, the formation of breasts can be a signal for a serious disease, like a thyroid disorder or a tumor in the adrenal gland or testicle. If there is any suspicion of any of the beforementioned, we will refer you to a medical specialist to further investigate this.

During the initial consultation with at OCP, you will discuss everything related to the procedure: which method will be used, expectations of the result, possible risks and aftercare. The Plastic Surgeon will also take pictures for your medical file, which is securely stored.
The Procedure
During the consultation it is assessed from which locations in the breasts the fat will be removed. The plastic surgeon will draw the places where the incisions for the small suction needles will be made. These places will be injected with anesthetics. After this, the tumescent anesthesia fluid is injected.
Depending on the chosen method, the fat can be vibrated away or liquefied. After this the fat cells are sucked by a liposuction machine. The surgeons constantly checks the place where fat is sucked away, to carefully assess if the right amount of fat is removed. This way, all the places on the chest are treated.
To remove the glandular tissue, a small incision will be made underneath the areola. The plastic surgeon will seperate the excess of tissue from the skin and muscle. The excess tissue is then removed. A small amount will always be left behind to prevent the nipple from collapsing. The incision are patched and you will wear an elastic corset to reduce bruising and swelling. The procedure takes approximately 1 to 1,5 hour.
Anesthesia
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or sedation. Sedation will, just as with general anesthesia, put you to sleep. The difference with general anesthesia is that during the procedure you can easily be awoken and still have exellent pain management. The big advantage of sedation is that you quickly recover after the procedure.
Location of the procedure
A gynecomastia / male breast reduction is a surgical procedure which will be done in a sterile environment. The procedure will take place in a hospital contracted by OCP, close to the clinic. Even though the procedure takes place at a different location, all your consultations and all contact goes via OCP.
After the procedure
When you recover from the general anesthesia you may feel weak and tired. Responses to general anesthesia differ per person, but special anesthetics are used to reduce the risk of nausea.
You may leave the hospital at the moment your plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist consider this acceptable. You may spend 1 night in the hospital to recover.
After the procedure you probably will not experience a lot of pain, but in case it is necessary you will be prescribed pain medication.The first 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure you will need to wear an elastic corset, which will reduce swelling. Your doctor will explain for how long you will need to wear this elastic corset.
Results
The recovery after a male breast reduction takes some time. Directly after the procedure little difference can be seen. The treated area is swollen and is bruised. After a few days, the bruising will start to disappear. It usually takes 4 weeks before most of the swelling has disappeared and the first results are visible. After a few months, the last swelling will be gone.
The final result can be assessed after 3 to 6 months. During this period, the skin will tighten itself. The plastic surgeon will give you realistic expectations of the result during the consultation.
Risks of an Liposuction
A gynecomastia / male breast reduction is done by an expert surgeon of OCP. Complications luckily rarely occur. As with most cosmetic surgeries, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, disinfectants or plasters. Also, even though the procedure is done under sterile conditions, the area could be infected. Chances to this are very small though.
