OCP is specialized in treating weakened upper arms by performing an arm lift, during which excess skin is removed by our experienced plastic surgeons. It is a typical ageing symptom; upper arms that get increasingly weaker and will show loose skin. This is not only because of the thinning of the skin, but also because the muscles weaken. Also if you have lost a lot of weight, there might be an excess of skin visible underneath your upper arms.
Typically, patients can go back to work and other normal activities starting at about one to two weeks after surgery.
The procedure is usually done under sedation or general anesthesia. You will not feel anything during the procedure.
The procedure takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity and type of the arm lift.

An excess of skin on the inside and outside of the upper arms can be caused by ageing, but also due to weight loss. Unattractive creases will be visible.
In case you find that there is a disturbing excess of skin on the inside of your upper arms, you may consider an arm lift. The excess skin will be removed. This does leave a scar, of which the visibility depends on the way your body will heal. Our experienced plastic surgeons will do everything to ensure that the scar will be as invisible as possible.
Upon the first contact with our Plastic Surgery department, you will be in contact with your own, dedicated Patient Coordinator. He or she will advise you on the procedure, help you choose a doctor, book an appointment and anything else you might need. This ensures that your experience is smooth and that you feel comfortable.
During the initial consultation with at OCP, you will discuss everything related to the procedure: which method will be used, expectations of the result, possible risks and aftercare. The Plastic Surgeon will also take pictures for your medical file, which is securely stored.
During the procedure
An arm lift is always performed in a sterile operating theatre under sedation or narcosis by an experienced plastic surgeon. First, the plastic surgeon will accurately draw on the upper arms the amount of skin that needs to be removed.
During the procedure the skin is detached from the underlying fat and muscle layers. The excess of skin is removed and an excess of fat is sucked away. The procedure takes approximately 2 hours.
Anesthesia
The procedure is done under sedation or general anesthesia. In the case of sedation you will be relaxed and sleeping. You will not feel anything during the procedure, but you can easily being awoken. It is also possible to perform this procedure under general anesthesia, this will be discussed with your doctor.
Location of the procedure
An arm lift is a surgical procedure which will be done in a sterile environment. The procedure will take place in a hospital contracted by OCP, close to the clinic. Even though the procedure takes place at a different location, all your consultations and all contact goes via OCP.
After the procedure
When you recover from the general anesthesia you might feel weak and tired. You may experience some pain after the procedure due to swelling and bruising. Usually light pain medication is enough to minimize the pain.
The Plastic Surgeon will assess your condition after the procedure and sometimes you can go home directly after the procedure. The pain after the procedure differs for each patient, but Paracetamol will suffice in most cases. The recovery other than that will be painless. As with any other cosmetic surgery the treated area needs time to heal.
You will use corrective armwear for 3 to 7 days to reduce swelling and bruising, as well as reducing tension on the wounds. You will need to wear this day and night.
After an arm lift you will need to take good care of yourself. You may do normal activities as long as you refrain from exercising. You may do this after 4 to 6 weeks. It is important that there is as little pressure or tension on the wounds as possible.
The first months the scar can be quite red of colour. After this they will adjust to your skin colour and become less visible. It is important to not expose the scars to sunlight during the first year after the procedure. Keep the scars covered or protect them with a high protection sun cream (sun block).
Risks of an Arm Lift
An arm lift is done by an expert surgeon of OCP and the technique is very refined. Complications luckily rarely occur. As with most cosmetic surgeries, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, disinfectants or plasters. Also, even though the procedure is done under sterile conditions, the area could be infected. Chances to this are very small though.
Our experience is that people expect a completely firm result. This is something that most of the time can not be achieved. The skin on your arms will be visibly firmer. The sutures will be done as beautiful as possible on the inside of the arms so that they will not be visible.Shortly after the procedure the tightening of the skin is visibly. Only after the swelling is reduced you can clearly see the result. The final result is only visible after the wound and the underlying tissue have healed completely. This is approximately 1 year after the procedure.If you have realistic expectations of the procedure, you will mostly be very happy after the procedure. The final result will depend on several factors: your build, your age, hormone function, recovery of your body and the elasticity of your skin. The plastic surgeon can clearly indicate which results may be expected.
