During a breast reduction, part of the skin and tissue is removed and the nipples is moved. This makes the breasts smaller and more firm. A breast reduction is a significant surgery that always leaves scars. Nevertheless, most women are very satisfied with the results.

The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. You will not feel anything during the procedure.
You can usually go home after the procedure. You will need to wear a supportive bra to support the new shape of your breasts.

Too heavy/large breasts can give all sorts of complaints; pain in the back, neck and shoulders are most frequent. Besides this, heavy breasts can limit you in your movement, for instance during exercising. When the breasts have severely sagged or have weakened, the skin under the breasts can get dirty and infect. These are all reasons to undergo a breast reduction.
Upon the first contact with our Plastic Surgery department, you will be in contact with your own, dedicated Patient Coordinator. He or she will advise you on the procedure, help you choose a doctor, book an appointment and anything else you might need. This ensures that your experience is smooth and that you feel comfortable.
During the initial consultation with at OCP, you will discuss everything related to the procedure: which method will be used, expectations of the result, possible risks and aftercare. The Plastic Surgeon will also take pictures for your medical file, which is securely stored.
During the procedure
A breast reduction is always performed under general anesthesia by an experienced plastic surgeon. During the procedure, the breasts are reduced by removing skin and tissue from the lower part of the breasts. By doing this, there will be a horizontal scar underneath the breast. To give the breast a natural form, a vertical incision is made from the areola directly downwards. This leaves a vertical scar. Finally, the nipple is repositioned upwards and usually the size of the areola is reduced. This leaves a small scar around the areola. The procedure takes approximately 1,5 hour.
Anesthesia
A breast reduction is always performed under general anesthesia. It might be that you have some anxiety for the general anesthesia, because of the weird feeling afterwards. You will be looked after by experienced staff and guided till you leave the hospital by nurses, the anesthesiologist and your plastic surgeon.
Location of the procedure
A breast reduction is a surgical procedure which will be done in a sterile environment. The procedure will take place in a hospital contracted by OCP, close to the clinic. Even though the procedure takes place at a different location, all your consultations and all contact goes via OCP.
After the procedure
When you recover from the general anesthesia you may feel weak and tired. Responses to general anesthesia differ per person, but special anesthetics are used to reduce the risk of nausea.
You may leave the hospital at the moment your plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist consider this acceptable. You may spend 1 night in the hospital to recover.
The first few weeks after the procedure you will need to wear a sportsbra, which will support the new shape of the breasts and reduces the swelling. Your doctor will explain for how long you will need to wear this bra.
We recommend to take a week rest after the procedure. After this you can continue your daily activities, but refrain from exercising. It is important that the first few weeks after the procedure that there will be no tension or pressure on the breasts. The sutures will be removed after a week.
The first months the scar can be quite red of colour. After this they will adjust to your skin colour and become less visible. It is important to not expose the scars to sunlight during the first year after the procedure. Keep the scars covered or protect them with a high protection sun cream (sun block).
Results
The result of a breast reduction is visible directly after the procedure. Your breasts will be quite swollen at this point though. After approximately 3 months you will have a good impression of the final result, which can be assessed after 1 year. The incisions that are necessary to reduce the breasts will be stitched as beautifully as possible.
It is important that you realize that after a breast reduction, the scars will always be visible. They will fade more and more after time, but they will never be invisible. Nevertheless, most women are very satisfied with result of their breast reduction.
Risks of a Breast Reduction
A breast reduction is done by an expert surgeon of OCP Medical Center. Complications luckily rarely occur. As with most cosmetic surgeries, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, disinfectants or plasters. Also, even though the procedure is done under sterile conditions, the area could be infected. Chances to this are very small though.
