Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Pregnancies, weight loss, aging; the skin on the lower abdomen can be weakened and stretched by multiple causes. By performing an abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck), we can improve this. When there is not an excess of skin but local fat accumulation, we can offer a liposuction as a solution.
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat in the abdominal area, creating a visibly flatter abdomen.
This procedure is done under general anesthesia. You will be asleep and not feel any pain during the procedure.

with a Tummy Tuck
If there is only too much skin below the belly button, then it might be enough to only perform a mini-abdominoplasty. If the entire abdominal wall is weakened and has slacked, including the skin and muscles above the belly button, then the best solution is an abdominoplasty. This procedure removes the excess skin and moves the belly button upwards. An abdominoplasty is a relatively heavy procedure.
Before you consider an abdominoplasty, you have to realize that you there might be some scarring visible. The scar will be on the lower abdomen from the side of the hip till the other side. Usually the belly button is carefully repositioned, but scarring will be visible around the belly button. Of course, all our experienced plastic surgeons will do their utmost to ensure that the scars will be within the ‘bikini-line’, so that it is not visible. An abdominoplasty can give you a visibly flatter abdomen.
Upon the first contact with our Plastic Surgery department, you will be in contact with your own, dedicated Patient Coordinator. He or she will advise you on the procedure, help you choose a doctor, book an appointment and anything else you might need. This ensures that your experience is smooth and that you feel comfortable.
During the initial consultation with at OCP, you will discuss everything related to the procedure: which method will be used, expectations of the result, possible risks and aftercare. The Plastic Surgeon will also take pictures for your medical file, which is securely stored.

The Procedure
An abdominoplasty is always performed under general anesthesia by an experienced plastic surgeon. The surgeon will make a slightly curved, horizontal incision above the pubis. From there the skin and fat up till the ribs will be detached, while the belly button will stay on the muscle layer below.
After this, the surgeon will reposition the abdomen to the normal position. The excess of skin and fat will be removed and the belly button is repositioned. The procedure takes approximately 2 hours.

Anesthesia
An abdominoplasty is always performed under general anesthesia. It might be that you have some anxiety for the general anesthesia, because of the weird feeling afterwards. You will be looked after by experienced staff and guided till you leave the hospital by nurses, the anesthesiologist and your plastic surgeon.

Location of the procedure
An Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure which will be done in a sterile environment. The procedure will take place in a hospital contracted by OCP, close to the clinic. Even though the procedure takes place at a different location, all your consultations and all contact goes via OCP.

After the procedure
When you recover from the general anesthesia you may feel weak and tired. Responses to general anesthesia differ per person, but special anesthetics are used to reduce the risk of nausea. After the procedure, the abdominal skin is sutured and you will lay in a special position to reduce tension on the sutures. In some cases two drains will be put in your abdomen to let blood and/or fluids leak out. Usually the drains are removed the day after the procedure.
You may leave the hospital at the moment your plastic surgeon and the anesthesiologist consider this acceptable. You will spend 1 or 2 nights in the hospital to recovery.
After the procedure you probably will not experience a lot of pain, but in case it is necessary you will be prescribed pain medication. Because your abdominal muscles are repostioned, you may have pain and discomfort when coughing, laughing or pushing.
The first 2 weeks after the procedure the abdominal wall needs time to heal. During this time you better rest and do not do any physically active work. After 2 weeks you may carefully resume your normal activities and after 6 weeks you may start exercising.
The first months the scar can be quite red of colour. After this they will adjust to your skin colour and become less visible. It is important to not expose the scars to sunlight during the first year after the procedure. Keep the scars covered or protect them with a high protection sun cream (sun block).

Results
Immediately after the procedure it is clearly visible that the abdomen is much flatter. The final result can only be assessed after 1 year after the procedure. Even though scarring will be visible after the procedure, most people are very satisfied with result. An abdominoplasty will give the best results if you are at your base weight before the procedure. It might be possible to lose some weight beforehand.

Risks of an Abdominoplasty
As with most cosmetic surgeries, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, disinfectants or plasters. Also, even though the procedure is done under sterile conditions, the area could be infected. Chances to this are very small though. Smoking increases the risk for an infection, so we therefore advise to quit smoking for several weeks. The plastic surgeon will explain more about this.
After an abdominoplasty, there will be a numbness in the lower abdomen. This is temporary and will get back to normal over time.
